Haunted Mansion and villians, especially Maleficent, have always been very popular. Being part of the Haunted Mansion the HHG have always been popular, but this past year they have become even more so with some of the best releases yet (Pin trading Ghosts, Pinbassador)
According to Disney Tinkerbell is by far the #1 most widely recognized character next to Mickey Mouse, and both characters make great traders. This is particularly true with Sorcerer Mickey. Women and girls like Tinkerbell while the men and boys go for Mickey.
It never hurts to have a few Winnie the Pooh and Friends (especially Eeyore) in the trade bag. While they don't command the dollar value of HM pins Pooh is a power hitter in the field.
Don't underestimate the power of a princess pin, especially Ariel. Go ahead and try to get pin 9655 or 23954. All I can say is good luck. Little girls in particular love the princess pins, but there aren't a shortage of older ladies with their childhood memories locked away on a favorite Disney love story.
There is no doubt that the movies propelled Pirates to greater heights (and excessive pin releases), but Pirate pins have always be very popular. A couple of the most sought after pins come from Pirates (Jail Scene comes to mind).
There are very few long time collectors who won't agree that Stitch took the pin trading community to greater heights (or lower lows if you consider the little blue critter has infiltrated every theme in Disney history (pin 38433 Stitch as Tinkerbell comes to mind. Uggh!!!). Over the past two years his value has declined, probably because Disney went from zero to way to many Stitch pins in a hurry, but nobody can go wrong having an extra Stitch pin for trade.
In my early pin trading days I collected Chip and Dale and those two little comedic characters still carry a power punch for trading. Chip and Dale have shown up on the most humorous pins (May all time favorite: Pin 5624: Disneyland 4th of July 2001Chip & Dale (2 Pin Set), and there are no shortage of HTF and valueable chip and dale pins (3002, 4481, 4509, 9272, 18221, 19867, 23358, 26454, 28891 to name a few), and anybody that trades overseas with Japan will tell you they are great to have if you are looking for something from Mickey and Pals (a Licensed Disney retailer in Japan).
Lastly, Jessica certainly catches they eye of many pin traders. I wonder why....

Other collections such as the Masterpiece, Piece of History, Hidden Mickey, DLRP Train, DL COM, 100 Mickey's have all had their time of popularity, but usually the most popular pins from those series includes one of the above characters.
