Molly,
The short version is that you fill in the first RSP with the pins you want (second and third RSPs are for duplicates you may want). The system then looks at everyone's first slot and allots them those pins and follows this trend down the list. If there is a slot that has a pin (let's say LE10) and more than 10 people want that, then the system randomly picks ten people who get that pin. The long version is here from Disney's website: http://eventservices.disney.go.com/files/RSP_FAQ_March2008.pdf Hope this helps. Cheers, Shawn and Carol ![]()

Here are two little tips that I use when filling out my RSP:
1. Items that are of an LE that is higher then the event capacity (example: Mystery Tin and Logo Pin) can be placed at the bottom of the 1st RSP as you are guaranteed to get them if they are on your 1st list. 2. Make sure to put the low LE pins that you really want higher up on your list. Hope this helps!!! |

Vicci's Bucket Explanation of the RSP process and how the pins are allotted:
When you get your RSP notification (RSP stands for Random Selection Process), you will be asked to list your desired pins in the order that you want them. So put the pins you want the most at the top of your RSP form. You'll see why in a minute. If you want more than 1 of a pin, you can fill out a 2nd RSP form and a 3rd RSP form. You only get one chance at each pin on each RSP. Once all the forms are in the process starts. It all happens within the computer, and I could give you the algorithm, but it would probably only confuse you more. Instead, I will use a "real human" version of what goes on inside the CPU. So the way this works is all the pins from the event are put into buckets. Some buckets have 1000 pins, some have 750 pins, some have 500 pins and so on, whatever the LE of each pin is. Imagine that each of the buckets is labelled Pin #1, Pin #2, etc. So, when it comes time to determine who gets what pins, imagine a cast member (hereafter known as CM) working through to allot the pins to the request. The CM is given a stack of forms that have all requested Pin #16 as their first choice. The CM takes the stack and in true 52 card pick-up fashion, tosses them all in the air where they are scattered all over the floor. The CM picks them up one by one andthey are not in the order that he got them in. This is the "random" part of RSP. The CM goes over to the bucket marked Pin #16 and sits down beside it, going through each form one by one. Every form gets a pin out of the bucket until either there are no more forms or the bucket is empty. If the bucket is empty, there are no more pin #16's to be allotted, so everyone else who requested Pin #16 is out of luck. If there are pins left, CM goes back to the desk, where a stack of forms waits. All these forms have Pin #16 as second on their list. CM tosses them up again to "randomize" the order and goes back to the bucket of Pin #16. Again, the pins are attached until either there are no morepins or no more forms. If there are more pins, CM goes back to the desk to pick up a stack of all those who listed Pin #16 as their third choice and repeats this cycle until there are no more forms or no more pins. If the pins hang around until the second RSP, then CM has to start over with the people who listed Pin #16 as the first choice on their second RSP and repeats. Again for the third RSP. If all the RSP forms are gone and there are still pins left, they will go into the "unsold" group of pins (as well as those pins that people decide they really don't need after they look at the grand total of all the pins on their list). If there aren't very many of a single pin, that one will be added to the 4th RSP that you only get to fill out once you are there and that sets CM to work again. If there are a lot of a single pin left, they go onto the "Merchandise still available" list that you get when you get your event packet. Those can be purchased without going through RSP. The idea is that everyone, no matter when they submit their RSP form up until the deadline, has an equal chance of getting the pins they want. You can see that it is important to list the pin you want the most first, so that there is a good chance that there will still be some in the bucket when CM goes to it. Don't wait and hope that it shows up on the merchandise list. I hope that explanation clears up some of the mystery. |
