No prob. If I can help at all let me know. If you want I'll track down some of the organizations that help with the cost.

Thanks - I'm gonna talk with my cat rescue friend who may know some organizations/discounts that might help. But I'll let you know if I'm still
looking after I talk to her.
Of course, as I said, the decision to keep them around isn't mine alone, so I've got some talking and figuring out to do first. 'Twas brillig! Jabberwocky

I had a situation close to yours. Our neighbors have cats, but they don't take care of them, so they run wild. And are very afraid of everyone. They run
when they see you, and will not come close.
There is the Daddy of them all, a black & white cat we call Casey. My husband calls him fat head, and my name is Casey-love. Anyway, he had a couple of b&w cats with him one day, all run when I come near. I would go out and leave a bowl of food, and water, and they would eventually come closer & closer when I would go out for the food. As I saw them, I would talk to them, just to let them hear my voice. Soon they would stay put while I walked by them, ignoring them. After about 2 months, I could actually pet the cats, but they still act scared of me. I got friendly with the Mama cat, and one of her babies. The other babies had all found homes, thank heavens!! We named the Mama cat Little Bit, and the baby Tid Bit. We were able to take both of them to the vet for their rabies shots, and they next week we got them spayed. That has been over 8 months ago, and Little Bit still is very skittish around me. Tid Bit sadly was caught & killed by 2 dogs we had roaming aroung the neighborhood. Never to be seen again, I might add. Would love to know whose dogs there belonged to!! But Little Bit is still around, just fed her & gave her fresh water and now I can pick her up to scratch her. Same with Casey-love. Everyonce in a while I will find a dead lizard by the back door, and give them lot's of praise for keeping our house safe. They are both very verbal cats, and "talk" to me when I now go outside. Have patience, and they will be your friends!! Good luck, Kathy |

I definitely think that some of them would eventually let me get close to them - especially the younger ones. Last night as I said, one of the
small-to-medium-sized ones stayed where it was and watched me while I put out the food bowl instead of running. And they're smart enough to have quickly
figured out the food bowl is a good thing.
One of them was on one of the chairs this morning when I looked outside and another out in the middle of the yard when I just looked out. Now to see what happens with the yard work today... 'Twas brillig! Jabberwocky

Just saw this - Quite a cat adventure you've been having!
I would highly recommend having the cats picked up by a local rescue group. You are right; it is dangerous for them to be outside in an area with predators. They are also going to multiply before you can blink. Mama will probably never enjoy interacting with humans, but the sooner the kittens can get into a foster home, the better the chance that they will make good pets for someone. Good luck! |

Oh what a patient and kind soul you are - the kittens are very lucky to have found themselves near someone so caring like yourself
Sounds like you are doing a good job watching over & taking care of the kittens. Patience is the main thing - it can take awhile for little ones to get use to you. Like others have said sometimes your local vet or rescue organizations will provide humane live traps to capture the animal and then offer discounted or free spay/neutering procedures. Also, check to see if there is a Feral Cat Program near your community. Our local college, Iowa State University of Vet. Medicine, participates in this program during the Fall & Spring semesters. There is no limit on how many cats you can bring in and the service is absolutely free - vaccinations included (all they ask in return is that a monetary donation, of your choice, be made towards the feral program). They will also crop or "notch" an ear on each one of the kittens - this allows the kittens to be identified as being part of a Feral Cat Program by other veterinarians, animal control, etc. if they should happen to return to living in the wild. Hope everything goes well for you & the kittens and please keep us posted Erin

Also, when you catch and neuter them they will become much more accepting of you. It will really calm them down, plus you never have to worry about anymore
baby kitties...

My friend who does cat rescue has already given me leads on places that might do free fixing of feral cats, so that's a start! It's the trapping
I'm not really sure about - I would be way too inept to manage it - but I'm hoping my friend can give me some leads to some local experts on that too.
Tonight's update - Well, the yard work/gardeners were out there today and reportedly there were no kitty sightings. When I came home tonight, I didn't see any of them around, but I put out more food in a bowl anyway. I kept checking back, but it was untouched for at least an hour or more. But when I checked back after about an hour and a half, the food was gone. Since I didn't see what ate it, I'm hoping it was something feline and not something else! LOL No sign of the kitties around though. I'll post tomorrow with any more updates. 'Twas brillig! Jabberwocky
