WHEN YOU TRADE A PIN ON PINPIC AND YOUR NO THAT THE PIN IS REAL NOT A FAKE PIN THAT YOU ARE GETING BACK. Here you mentioned pin grading allows people to know that they aren't buying/trading for a fake. How do the graders determine if a pin is a fake or not? There is a difference between grading and authentication. What makes the people doing the grading qualified?

Grading - A description of the condition of a collectible item. Authentication - Verifying the originality or genuineness of a collectible item. In my opinion, these are 2 different components. Grading a Pin only tells the condition of a pin, i.e., scratches, dings, etc. It does not verify the authenticity. Given these definitions, it is very easy to "grade" a fake or counterfeit pin as "high", as the pin is only graded on its condition and not authenticated. This "high" grade may well be the grade given to a counterfeit pin. As we know, even for many of us experienced pin collectors, sometimes is it difficult to tell the difference between an authentic and counterfeit pin. I along with others would like to know the qualification(s) of the individuals doing this "grading", and if they consider "grading" the same as "authentication". If so, I believe that there is a big problem here. While this concept may be out there in the pin community, please use your best judgment in the weight you place on "grading" in your collecting, trading and buying. Joette

Also, I believe that someone mentioned Tomarts. I would not place Tomarts in the same category as grading and authentication because of the following: Tomarts is just a guide that publishes an opinion of what the pins are worth, with the letter grades indicating a value range, rather than an actual value. For instance, two different pins could have the same letter grade, but one could be valued closer to the lower end of the range while the second one is at the higher end. However, in that instance, the book makes no indication as to where in the range to value any given pin. Furthermore, Tomarts just suggests how a given pin might be valued, but unlike graders and evaluators, it makes no assertions about a specific pin - it simply is a tool and guide for traders to use to evaluate their pins, and ultimately, the final opinion of any given pin's value is made by the traders themselves. And that gets me to what I consider one of the most dangerous aspect of grading and authenticating: who will become the 'authorities' to grade and authenticate these pins? And how will we know what makes them 'qualified' to hold these positions? It's one thing when two pin traders consider how they value pins and try to come to an agreement on their own ... but I believe that works where the value of the pin ultimately is perceived as being in the eye of the beholder and will vary from trader to trader. What will happen when you introduce (yes, I know grading/authenticating isn't new to collectible hobbies, but it is new to pin trading) the opinons of 'authorized' graders and authenticators, which unless there only is one grader and authenticator, inevitably will vary from grader to grader and authenticator to authenticator, into the mix? I think this is a slippery slope that we're really better avoiding ... Stefanie

It may work on cards, comics, and action figures, but grading applies to the paper or plastic elements (the card, the comic book and pages, the card and bubble encasing the action figure). Grading won't work for pins. Not everything produced from the pin manufacturer is produced flawlessly. Are we going to be punished when we get our pins back and they're graded lower because of manufacturer flaws and therefore they're not worth as much? That's just unacceptable. Some pins are so difficult to acquire that we don't mind the trading wear and tear when we get the pin; grading will only turn pin trading into somewhat of a monopoly for those who have been hoarding their brand new pins, and those who may have been waiting for a moment like this. Also, there are so many pins out there from all over in space and time that no single agency is going to be an expert in authentication. We completely disagree that grading pins will have any impact on the increase in fun of pin trading. If anything, grading pins would make pin trading LESS fun. Sure, grading pins would make it great for the avid seller, but realistically, you have more collectors and traders than sellers. Grading would easily discourage your Average Joe and Jane traders from pin trading because they'll become jaded; they'll think that they will never be able to acquire certain pins because of grading restrictions that would otherwise jack up the value of a pin that really isn't worth much to begin with. How would that make pin trading fun? It wouldn't. We know that there is a good mix of buyers, sellers, and traders, but fundamentally, this is still PIN TRADING and everyday, we get new traders -- just regular folks who want to enjoy a hobby with their kids, spouses, whatever. For me, "grading" a pin takes it one step closer to being currency, and I don't think of pins as currency. I have pins I collect and I trade pins that I don't want to collect for those I do. I have pins I trade just for the sheer pleasure of trading (the OE book and my kids-of-all-ages book). I will buy a pin that I can't trade for, and it makes no difference to me whether it has a grade or not. Your mileage may vary. This is how I feel. Even Disney has acknowledged that their pins are custom to flaws due to the nature of how they are made. There used to be a HUGE disclaimer on the Disney Auction pins when they were still on Ebay. Then if you got the pins and you had one that had a problem they would makeyou photograph it and email it in and they had to determine if it was "bad" enough to warrant a return or replacement! Boy it had to be really bad to warrant attention! The pins right off the rack are often scratched, pitted, posts bent and enamel ripples among other issues! I think this is a ridiculous concept and I for one will take the money I save from having my pins graded and buy well...more pins! Shell My Frames My Wants My Trades

One, it's just too expensive for all I've got. Two, I honestly believe that all this 'grading' is for those people looking to make some kind of money off these items; speculating, isn't that what it's called? I collect because I enjoy this stuff; I like looking at and wearing my pins; I enjoy being able to re-read my comics when I want and to look through my cards and show them off to interested friends & acquaintances. I guess it all depends on one's definition of "collector" and one's reason for collecting. And I will say again my favorite line about collectibles and their "worth" - something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it, a line of thought that makes a whole lot of sense to me. That graded 1st edition comic valued at $100 is worthless if no one wants to pay that much for it. Thanks for 'listening'!
