I'm not gonna get entirely worked up and try to cause any flame wars, but hear me out coming as an artist myself, yeah it does bother me a bit. I'm not
gonna sit here and say which is better, because that's not the point. There's nothing "stealing" about an artist drawing a fanart of a Disney
character as long as they are not selling it for profit. Hot Topic is already in several lawsuits right now, for taking pictures off Deviant Art (that's an
art posting website for those not in the know) and putting them on t-shirts without artist consent. The legs look exactly the same, and for someone to say they
don't recognise it as Jessica... well I don't know what to tell ya. But simply speaking as an artist myself, if I drew a unique pose of Simba, that
wasn't related to the movie and was entirely original, and then turned around and found it on merchandise, I'd be a little upset too. It's just a
bummer especially when there's no outlet for us fans to help design pins unless you're a CM and you win those few contests, but the pin team turns
around and gets inspirtations from original works from artists who may dream of making a pin themselves, instead they won't get any credit for a design
maybe they worked really hard on, and now what if that fanart isn't seen as original? It can potentially turn from an original pose to "Oh well you
obviously based that off of blank". And yes it really does happen that way.
On a related note about the pin team stealing other Disney sources artwork, well actually they kinda do. But Disney as a company owns all their own works and are up for grabs if they want to use it on merch. I found this picture on Deviant art
I watch this artist, and she works for the Disney company, the sketch is one of hers that she did for the Three Musketeers movie, the pin obviously made from it, she recently found it when she went to WOD in NYC, she was mildly tiffed that the artist took their own liberties in changing her art, but in the end thought it was kinda neat that something she drew for them turned into something cool.
There's my perspective, AS a Disney fanartist, that's all.
